THE FOUNDATION AT MCCC AWARDS THE PFC. DENNIS J. MILLER JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Foundation at Monroe County Community College has awarded the Pfc. Dennis J. Miller Jr. Memorial Scholarship to Ryan Hayes. The $1,650 Winter 2025 scholarship of $1,000 is to be used for tuition, fees and books.

Hayes, of Woodhaven, is a 2022 graduate of Oscar A. Carlson High School in Gibraltar. He is studying pre-education while attending MCCC and serves as a Writing Fellow, assisting fellow students with their writing skills, which he believes will develop skills that will benefit his career as a history teacher. After graduation in May 2025, Ryan plans to transfer to the University of Michigan. He is the son of Melissa Hays and Allen Hays.

The scholarship was established in memory of Pfc. Dennis J. Miller, Jr., who served with the 2nd Infantry Division in the United States Army, and lost his life while serving in Iraq on November 10, 2004. A former MCCC history major, Dennis withdrew from classes to join the Army. To honor his dream of returning to MCCC to study history, this scholarship was established by his family and friends to benefit a student studying history at MCCC.

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must be majoring in history and/or planning to teach history and co-op/intern at any organization or institution in Monroe County that provides history education or historic preservation. Additionally, a student must maintain a 3.0 grade point average and a three-quarter time enrollment status of nine credit hours or more.
Current and future students and their parents are reminded that there is still time to submit an online, one-time application for consideration for a 2025-2026 scholarship at www.monroeccc.edu/scholarships. The deadline to apply for more than $325,000 in scholarships is March 1, 2025.
