DeVries Student Symposium to Celebrate Artistic and Research Excellence

The 4th Annual Jim Devries Student Symposium at Monroe County Community College is scheduled for Friday, April 11 and will feature student and poster presentations, the reveal of the 39th Images Art and Literary Magazine, and a student art show.

Approximately 40-50 students will participate, many of whom are members of the MCCC Honors Program, which provides high-achieving and highly motivated students with opportunities for service leadership, community-based civic-engagement and advanced academic scholarship.

Faculty will serve as hosts to review and rate presentations using a standard rubric with the goal of helping hone students' presentation abilities and build their confidence as they continue to through college and the professional world.

The event is free and open to the public. It will take place in the La-Z-Boy Center, which is located on the college's Main Campus at 1555 S. Raisinville Rd. in Monroe.

There will be three sessions for student presentations: a morning session from 11 a.m.-noon, an afternoon session from 1-2 p.m. and an evening session from 5-7 p.m.

Students will be available to discuss poster projects in the La-Z-Boy Center Board Room between noon and 1 p.m.

The Images Magazine reveal and student art show will be held in the Atrium from 6:30–8:30 p.m.

Images is an annual publication of student poetry, prose and art. Faculty members of the Humanities/Social Sciences Division edit the magazine. Although most of the work chosen for publication comes from the art classes and MCCC’s creative writing course, the magazine welcomes submissions from all students.

“Dr. James E. DeVries dedicated 40 years to teaching at Monroe County Community College and served as a college trustee,” said Edmund La Clair, associate professor of history and Honors Program coordinator. “He provided personal assistance students, helping with tuition, job placement and the gift of books from his personal library. His passing in 2018 prompted the establishment of this symposium to serve as a lasting tribute to his legacy of teaching and service.”

In addition to these events, the Phi Theta Kappa Initiation Ceremony will be held from 5-6 p.m. in the Holladay Theater, which is located in the lower level of the Campbell Academic Center on Main Campus. Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society for two-year colleges. Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is by invitation to all students who achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 and have earned at least 12 semester hours at MCCC.
