The Foundation at Monroe County Community College has awarded the Pfc. Dennis J. Miller Jr. Memorial Scholarship to Tayler Pearson. The scholarship of $1,000 is to be used for tuition, fees and books.
Pearson, of Romulus, MI, is a 2013 honors graduate of James Madison High School online program. She is studying history while attending MCCC and will be participating in an internship this summer with the River Raisin National Battlefield Park. She is the daughter of Richard Paul Hawkins and the late Jenean Gayle Hawkins, her inspiration. Tayler credits her husband, Preston Pearson, their three children with the courage to pursue her passion for history.
The scholarship was established in memory of PFC Dennis J. Miller, Jr., who served with the 2nd Infantry Division in the United States Army, and lost his life while serving in Iraq on November 10, 2004. A former MCCC history major, Dennis withdrew from classes to join the Army. To honor his dream of returning to Monroe County Community College to study history, this scholarship was established by his family and friends to benefit a student studying history at MCCC.
To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must be majoring in history and/or planning to teach history and co-op/intern at any organization or institution in Monroe County that provides history education or historic preservation. Additionally, a student must maintain a 3.0 grade point average and a three-quarter time enrollment status of nine credit hours or more.
