MCCC TO HOST 'FAFSA AND PIZZA' WORKSHOP

MONROE, Mich. -- Monroe County Community College will host a "FAFSA and Pizza Workshop" the evening of Aug. 7 to help prospective and current students fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

The workshop runs from 5:30-8 p.m. in Founders Hall, Room 132, and students can drop in at any time during those hours. However, registration is required. To register, go to www.monroeccc.edu/free. The session, as well as pizza and pop, are free.

In order to apply for various forms of financial aid at MCCC, including grants, work study, loans and most scholarships, students must fill out the FAFSA.

Typically, the FAFSA goes live on October 1, but after a major overhaul of both the application and the federal-aid system, the FAFSA didn’t become available until the end of December, and even then, it wasn’t fully functional or working as intended, according to a July 23 article in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Since it went live, numerous errors and glitches have hampered students, so MCCC's Financial Aid Office and Office of Admissions have joined forces to assist them in-person in completing the application.

In addition to grants, work study, loans and most scholarships, completing the FAFSA is required if students want to take advantage of the state of Michigan's free-tuition programs, including:

  • The Community College Guarantee. Monroe County residents who graduated from high school in 2023 and 2024 may be eligible for free tuition and fees at MCCC. In addition to free tuition and fees, students who qualify for a Federal Pell Grant can receive a $1,000 Michigan Achievement Bonus award.
  • Michigan Reconnect: If you are age 21 or older, a Monroe County resident and don't have a college degree, you could attend MCCC tuition-free.

For more information on the state of Michigan's free tuition programs offered at MCCC, please contact the Office of Admissions at (734) 384-4104 or admissions@monroeccc.edu or go to www.monroeccc.edu/free
