The community is invited to participate in a special Agora Chili Supper event on Saturday, February 10, 2024, from noon - 4 p.m. to help raise funds to send the award-winning Agora student newspaper staff, including student editors, student writers and student content contributors, to the College Media National Convention in New York City this spring. The cost for the supper is $20 per person and includes the main course of chili along with an array of garnishes and tasty side dishes. No reservations are needed. The supper will be held in the cafeteria in the Warrick Student Center cafeteria on the college's main campus, 1555 S. Raisinville Road, Monroe, MI.
The Agora is Monroe County Community College's student-run print and digital newspaper (https://mcccagora.com/) published throughout the academic year. Last year The Agora student staff received two national awards during this very important convention, including most notably first place in the Apple Awards for best website in the two-year school category in the College Media Awards national contest. Lexi Greenwood, former Agora features editor, earned an honorable mention for her column on battling mental health issues.
In addition to the awards ceremony, the national convention provides a unique opportunity for the students to network with fellow collegiate journalists and professionals in the field of journalism, attend workshops and seminars, tour industry icons, such as the Associated Press headquarters, and learn more about professional opportunities from experts in the field of journalism.
