MCCC CELEBRATES 60 YEARS OF ENRICHING LIVES

MONROE, Mich. -- Last evening, more than 75 guests gathered in Monroe County Community College’s La-Z-Boy Center atrium to celebrate the college’s 60th anniversary and its dedication to enriching the lives of our students and the community.

At the reception, MCCC President Dr. Kojo A. Quartey provided a community update on the college's recent successes, and the college unveiled Volume 3 of its history book series, titled “Monroe County Community College in the 21st Century – A History.” All guests were provided with a free copy of the new book.

In addition to Quartey's presentation, MCCC's founding president, Dr. Ron Campbell, who turned 99 earlier this year, made a special guest appearance via a pre-recorded video addresses, and wished MCCC a happy anniversary.

In his address, Quartey talked about many the successes of MCCC within the last few years in three key areas covered in the college's 2020-25 Strategic Plan: Student-focused Service and Affordability, Academic Excellence and Student Success, and Innovation and Community Responsiveness.

Among the topics covered were:

  • Reducing transportation barriers for students via the Husky Shuttle
  • A free program to help students prepare for college - Husky Hype-up
  • The introduction of 10 new academic programs
  • A new Auto Tech Specialist Apprenticeship Program offered by Monroe Dodge in partnership with MCCC
  • Helping the community learn about vehicle electrification
  • The new Student Emergency Fund's role in assisting students with immediate financial needs
  • A new student mentoring program
  • The launch of Mental Health Services on campus
  • The role of the Heck’s Market Food Pantry and Heck’s Market Grab ‘n Go in assisting students with food insecurity
  • MCCC's partnership with Monroe, Mason, Ida, and Jefferson schools to eliminate the admissions application step for seniors 
  • The Respiratory Therapy program's 2024 state championship "Sputum" bowl team
  • The Practical Nursing program's earning of initial accreditation for achievement of quality and excellence
  • The Criminal Justice program's new Explorer Program 
  • Introducing prospective students to nuclear careers
  • The allocation of $10.9 million in state funding for the future Welch Center for Health and Public Safety, for which ground was broken earlier this month
  • MCCC and the Monroe Family YMCA's partnership on the YMCA's Local Meal Distribution Program
  • Community Conversations that are steering a bright future of Whitman Center in Temperance
  • MCCC's national recognition in 2024 for excellence in communications to the community
