Monroe County Community College will be offering a new transportation service starting with the Fall 2024 Semester, which begins Wednesday, August 21, 2024.
Operated in partnership with Lake Erie Transit (LET), The Husky Shuttle will provide ‘door-to-door’ transportation on Mondays and Wednesdays during the academic year for students who reside in Frenchtown Township or the City of Monroe.
Husky Shuttle will pick up students at their homes and bring them to campus at either 9 a.m. or 11 a.m. Students will be picked up at 3 p.m. each day of operation from campus and returned to their home.
“Husky Shuttle exemplifies our vision to eliminate barriers for students to access the high-quality affordable education provided by MCCC,” said Dr. Joshua W. Myers, executive director of The Foundation at MCCC. “I am grateful to Lake Erie Transit for being an enthusiastic partner in this effort and to our donors who made the funding available to provide this critical service,” said Myers.
“We consider this a pilot project, with the possibility for expanding the service to more communities or by adding more days and times to the schedule, based on the needs of current and prospective students,” said Dr. Kojo Quartey, president of MCCC.
Transportation has been identified as a barrier to attending college for some students. When exploring the need and system capacity for a service like the Husky Shuttle, MCCC looked at the schedule of when the bulk of classes, especially required general education courses, are offered during the week, along with student demographics and input from students. “Our goal for Husky Shuttle is to identify and serve the needs of as many students as possible who, up to now, aren’t attending MCCC or have had to drop classes mid-semester due to transportation issues.,” said Myers.
To be considered for the service, prospective or current students completed a 10-question online Interest Form available at www.monroeccc.edu/shuttle. A priority deadline of July 1 recently passed; however, interested students may still apply.
“We don’t want to discourage students from applying for Husky Shuttle if they discover they might benefit from this service after the July 1 Priority deadline, especially when circumstances change, such as an unexpected transportation situation arises,” said Myers. “That date will help us in our planning, especially in this initial pilot effort.”
Current and prospective students do not have to be registered for Fall 2024 semester classes to apply for the Husky Shuttle service. In fact, some may find it helpful in planning their class schedules if they know they will have reliable transportation on Mondays and Wednesdays.
