The Foundation at Monroe County Community College has awarded the Philip J. Iott Memorial Scholarship to Cassandra Hayton. The $2,100 scholarship is to be used for tuition, fees and books.
Hayton, of Newport, received her GED from Airport High School in 2006. She is pursuing an associate of science degree from MCCC. Cassandra works at the Salvation Army Harbor Light Center where she plans to continue to grow professionally and serving residents in their sobriety journey with the knowledge she is gaining while studying at MCCC. She is the mother of BriLynn Young and the daughter of Tina Brothers.
This scholarship was established by Pennie M. Iott, with family and friends, to honor her late husband’s commitment to the youth of the Monroe community. The scholarship is awarded annually to a student who has participated in the Balanced and Restorative Justice (BARJ) system or a student who has participated in the MCCC Upward Bound Program who, at the time of graduation, was in good standing with the program. The student must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours per semester. Preference may be given to an applicant who has lived in the Monroe County Youth Center.
