THE FOUNDATION AT MCCC AWARDS THE LAVERNE B. NORTON SCHOLARSHIP

The Foundation at Monroe County Community College has awarded the LaVerne B. Norton Scholarship to Sara Ackerman, Joni Beaugrand, Larissa Coleman, Evie Larrow, Angela Mocniak, Tully Murphy, Jenna Palmer, Michelle Pierce, Danielle Raasch, Michelee Rigdon, Kylee Van Heusen and Breanna Whited. Each $2,500 scholarships is to be used for tuition, books, and fees.

ackerman photoAckerman, of Monroe, is a 2017 GED graduate. She is currently studying pre-biology at MCCC. She is involved with PRISM and Good Trouble Monroe. Sara is the wife of Larisa Ackerman and the mother to Jovanni.

 

 

beaugrand photoBeaugrand, of Ida, is a 1993 graduate of F.J Brennan High School, Windsor, Ontario. She is currently studying business administration at MCCC. She is a parent mentor for families with children that have special needs. Joni is the mother to Melinda and Wayne.

 

 

coleman photoColeman, of Monroe, is a 2018 graduate of Michigan Virtual Charter Academy. She is currently studying psychology and criminal justice at MCCC. Larissa is the mother to Mason Wright.

 

  

 

  
larrow photoLarrow, of Erie, is a 2020 graduate of Mason High School. She is currently studying nursing at MCCC and is a member of the Student Nursing Association and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She is a volunteer head coach for a U13 co-ed soccer team and also volunteers at Mason Central Elementary for the before- and after-school care program. Evie is the daughter of Jenn and Corey Larrow.

 

  

mocniak photoMocniak, of Petersburg, is a 2000 graduate of Topeka High School, Topeka, KS. She is currently studying graphic design at MCCC. She volunteered at HELP portraits in Toledo photographing and editing portraits for underprivileged families. Angela is the wife of Jason Mocniak, the daughter of Mary Spencer, and the mother to Logan, Gavin, and Collin.

 

  

Murphy, of Monroe, is a 2010 graduate of Jefferson High School. He is currently studying nursing at MCCC. Tully is the son Randy and Suzanne Mazur.

palmer photoPalmer, of Monroe, is a 2017 graduate of Monroe High School. She is currently studying psychology at MCCC. She volunteers at the Monroe County Gun Club, working at their dinners and special events. Jenna is the daughter of Jeremiah Palmer and Jill Benore.

 

 

  

pierce photoPierce, of Monroe, is a 1989 graduate of Freeport High School, Freeport, IL. She is currently studying nursing at MCCC. Michelle is the wife of Charles Pierce and the mother to Briana Shackelford and Brielle Pierce.

 

 

 

  

raasch photoRaasch, of Ida, is a 2004 graduate of Monroe High School. She is currently studying pre-nursing at MCCC. Danielle is the mother to Evalee Roach.

  

 

  

rigdon photoRigdon, of Monroe, is a 2004 graduate of Monroe High School. She is currently taking general education courses at MCCC. She volunteers at Paula’s House and making Braille Bibles for the blind at Lutheran Braille Workers Inc. Michelee is daughter of Kenneth Rigdon and Rhonda Henhawk.

  

 

 

 

 

van heausean phtooVan Heusen, of Erie, is a 2017 graduate of Sand Creek High School, Sand Creek, MI. She is currently studying criminal justice at MCCC. She was a volunteer at the humane society and participated in community work with her sports teams. Kylee is the daughter of Kevin VanHeusen.

 

 

 

whitied photoWhited, of Petersburg, is a 2015 graduate of Summerfield High School. She is currently studying business management at MCCC. She has volunteered at Humane Ohio, Redline Training Gym, and Dundee Senior Center to raise funds for the Spring 2023 study aboard trip to Italy. Breanna is the daughter of Curt Whited and Monique Mason.

 

 

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must maintain part-time enrollment status of six credit hours or more, demonstrate financial need and/or be a student with academic promise. Preference will be given to students who are residents of Monroe County and are single parents or students raised in a single-parent household.
