The Foundation at Monroe County Community College has awarded the Captain Joseph M. Liedel Memorial Scholarship to Sydney Spicer. The $900 scholarship is to be used for tuition, books, and fees.

spicer photoSpicer, of Monroe, is a 2021 graduate of Monroe High School. She is pursuing an associate of science degree with general studies while attending MCCC. She is an active member and founder of the new MCCC Sports Club that started last fall and Holy Ghost Lutheran Church. Sydney is the daughter of Bryan and Jo Ann Spicer.

The Joseph M. Liedel Memorial Scholarship will continue to be awarded in perpetuity annually from the interest earned on the $20,000 in donations that endowed the fund along with any future donations, including the proceeds from future annual Joseph M. Liedel Memorial Golf Outings.

Joseph liedelThe scholarship was established in Liedel's memory following his death in the line of duty as a captain in the Monroe Charter Township Fire Department. A lifelong Monroe County resident, he chose to follow in his father, James’, footsteps as a firefighter, beginning with the department’s Fire Explorer program. During his 28 years with the department he responded to tens of thousands of emergencies in Monroe County, which he was doing when he suffered a brain bleed on July 31, 2020. Complications from his condition resulted in his death on August 23, 2020 at the age of 48.

“Establishing the Captain Joseph M. Liedel Memorial Scholarship has been a tremendous honor for myself and my family,” Dana Trowbridge-Mette, Joe’s cousin said. “With this fund, we hope to carry on Captain Liedel’s legacy for many years to come while providing the opportunity to Monroe County firefighters, and their families, to pursue and excel in their education.”

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must be a Monroe County resident and a current or former Monroe County firefighter or the sibling, child or grandchild of a firefighter.
