Monroe County Community College’s Office of Lifelong Learning is offering a series of Native American workshops led by Barbara Mauter, an MCCC adjunct instructor known for her critical thinking class activities and whose interests center around reading, thinking, how our minds work, and Native American culture and history.
Each workshop is $49. Seniors who are 60 or over and are residents of Monroe County pay only $24.50 for each.
The workshops will be held in Room 173d of the Warrick Student Services/Administration Building, 1555 S. Raisinville Rd., on MCCC's Main Campus.
They include:
- Finding Poetry Workshop, April 22, 10-11:30 a.m. This hands-on, "found poetry” workshop and will help participants write their own poems. They will be guided through the steps in creating an original poem (or two).
- An Introductory Workshop to Mini-Mindfulness, May 13, 10-11:30 a.m. Mindfulness involves acceptance, meaning that we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them -- without believing, for instance, that there is a “right” or a “wrong” way to think or feel in a given moment. According to Mauter, Mindfulness has been shown to improve physical health; it can help relieve stress, lower blood pressure and improve sleep. Mindfulness may be helpful in dealing with COVID-19 stress.
- Medical Plants & Healing Totems, June 10, 10-11:30 a.m. Native Americans are renowned for their medicinal plant knowledge, according to Mauter, and many of our modern-day remedies and medicines are based on the Native American knowledge of the different plants and herbs they have used for thousands of years. This workshop will explore and touch on some medicinal history and the healing properties of Native herbs. Note: Information to be shared is for interest purposes only and not a substitute for medical advice.
Mauter has more than 20 years college teaching experience. She has taught and presented various workshops for the MCCC, the University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University and Lourdes University. She is also a Master Online Instructor. Mauter completed Active Learning Classroom Training and has been incorporating new ideas into her workshops. Additionally, she attended Course Design Institute, expanding her knowledge of course design.
