THE FOUNDATION AT MCCC AWARDS THE LaVERNE B. NORTON SCHOLARSHIP

The Foundation at Monroe County Community College has awarded the LaVerne B. Norton Scholarship to Sara Ackerman, Meghan Brochu, Megan Gray, Savannah Howard, Christian Masserant, Allison Organ, Danielle Raasch, Cayla Rose, Kristen Scheer, Jordan Self and Mira South.  Each $2,300 scholarship is to be used for tuition, books, and fees.

Ackerman PhotoAckerman, of Monroe, received her GED in 2017.  She will be studying biology at MCCC and is a member of the Gender and Sexuality Alliance Club and Criminal Justice Club. Ackerman is a volunteer for Embrace Monroe and Stop Soldier Suicide.  She is the mother to Jovanni Ackerman.

 

 

Brochu, of Monroe, is a 2017 graduate of Milan High School. She will be taking courses at MCCC to become a radiologist technician.  Brochu is a member of Phi Theta Kappa.  Meghan is the daughter of Barbara and Steven Brochu.

Gray PhotoGray, of Monroe, is a 2015 graduate of Monroe High School. She is undecided on her area of study but will be taking business and sociology courses at MCCC. Gray has volunteered at a women’s abuse shelter.  Megan is the daughter of Morgan Gray.

 

 

Howard PhotoHoward, of Dundee, received her GED in 2019.  She is studying cyber security while attending MCCC.  Howard has volunteered at her local VFW and was a regular volunteer at Monroe County Intermediate School District.  Savannah is the mother to Elijah Howard-Hollister.

 

 

Masserant PhotoMasserant, of Monroe, is a 2021 graduate of Ida High School. He is pursuing a business management degree at MCCC. While attending IHS, he was a member of the school’s Student Leadership Team.  Christian is the son of Duane Masserant.

 

 

 

Organ photoOrgan, of Lambertville, is a 2020 graduate of Bedford High School. She will be studying nursing while attending MCCC.  Allison is the daughter of Timothy and Stacey Organ.

 

 

 

Raasch PhotoRaasch, of Monroe, is a 2004 graduate of Monroe High School. She is studying nursing at MCCC.  Danielle is the mother to Evalee Roach.

 

 

 

Rose PhotoRose, of Monroe, received her GED in 2007 from Monroe High School.  She is studying nursing while attending MCCC.  Rose volunteered at vaccination clinics and is working on creating a Mom2Mom support group for college students.  Cayla is the daughter of David Rose and the last Wendy Love and mother to her son Rayden Laurence.

 

 

Scheer, of Monroe, is a 2014 graduate of Monroe High School. She is currently in the respiratory therapy program at MCCC and is a member of the Respiratory Therapy Club.  She is the mother to Amara Scheer and daughter of Ann Scheer and Tom Scheer.

Self photoSelf, of Monroe, is a 2019 graduate of Monroe High School.  She is working on her prerequisite courses at MCCC then plans to transfer to The University of Toledo and major in social work.  Jordan is the daughter of Gregory Self.

 

 

 

South photoSouth, of Monroe, is a 2006 graduate of Ypsilanti High School.  She is studying business administration/management while attending MCCC.  South participates in food gatherings and volunteers in mentorship programs in her community.  Mira is the daughter of Debra Woods South and mother to Miran and Marai’ya South.

 

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must maintain part-time enrollment status of six credit hours or more, demonstrate financial need and/or be a student with academic promise. Preference will be given to students who are residents of Monroe County and are single parents or students raised in a single-parent household.
