MONROE, Mich. – Monroe County Community College and the Southeast Michigan Construction Academy will offer an Electrical Apprenticeship – Level 1 class this Fall Semester.
Students must begin in the Fall Semester and the apprenticeship course continues through the Winter Semester semesters. The course starts Aug. 27. Classes will meet on Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at MCCC.
Students will have the opportunity to interview with electrical contractors located in Southeast Michigan for positions as they become available. Employment is not guaranteed or required to attend this training. The Southeast Michigan Construction Academy will work with students who would like to be employed in the electrical field.
The electrical apprenticeship program will follow the industry-recognized curriculum of the National Center for Construction Education & Research. Students who enroll will be eligible to become a registered apprentice. The course is hands-on and begins with basic construction safety in residential, commercial and industrial construction. All students will receive instruction in operating hand and power tools. They will be introduced to electrical theory and the rules and regulations that govern the trade through the National Electrical Code. In addition, students will learn the basics of electrical circuits, conduit bending and residential electrical service. The course will address career paths in the electrical industry and the apprenticeship requirements. Throughout the Level 1 course, students will spend time in the classroom as well as shop space to learn performance tasks. Successful completion of this course will result in NCCER credentials and an OSHA 10 certification.
Students must be 18 or older with a high school diploma/GED in order to apply. Students must also provide copies of their driver’s license, Social Security card and high school diploma/GED.
Fall tuition is $2,200, including books. Winter tuition is $1,600, including books
NCCER is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) education foundation created in 1996. It was developed with the support of more than 125 construction CEOs and various associations and academic leaders who united to revolutionize training for the construction industry. Sharing the common goal of developing a safe and productive workforce, these companies created a standardized training and credentialing program for the industry. This progressive program has evolved into curricula for more than 60 craft areas and a complete series of more than 70 assessments offered in over 4,000 NCCER-accredited training and assessment locations across the United States. NCCER develops standardized construction and maintenance curricula and assessments with portable credentials. These credentials are tracked through NCCER’s National Registry which allows organizations and companies to track the qualifications of their craft professionals and/or check the qualifications of possible new hires. The National Registry also assists craft professionals by maintaining their records in a secure database.
The Southeast Michigan Construction Academy meets and exceeds all the required standards of the nationally standardized program. As a result, each student has credential listed in a national registry that can be easily transferred among accredited sponsors and throughout the industry. In other words, a student can take their transcripts to any other participating NCCER sponsor and continue training.
