The Foundation At MCCC Awards The Laverne B. Norton Scholarship

MONROE, Mich. – The Foundation at Monroe County Community College has awarded the LaVerne B. Norton Scholarship to Jacob Alsip, Erica Badger, Barbara Boone, Sarah Daniels, Svetlana Giaimo, Kristina Gucwa, Keaton Marks, Diego Martinez, Kylie Moody and Kayla Parrish. Each $2,125 scholarship is to be used for tuition, books, and fees.

Alsip of Temperance is a 2018 graduate of Bedford High School. He will be pursuing a computer science degree while attending MCCC. He is the son of Amy and Daniel Alsip.

Badger of Newport is a 2003 graduate of Jefferson High School. She will be studying nursing while attending MCCC. Badger is currently a Student Nurses Association member. She is the mother to Isabella and Robert.

Boone of Monroe is a 1995 graduate of Bowsher High School, Toledo, Ohio. She will be studying nursing while attending MCCC. She is the mother to Clifton and Andre.

Daniels of Monroe is a 2018 graduate of Monroe High School. She is undecided about her major while attending MCCC. Daniels has participated in Relay for Life and March of Dimes. She has received her CTE Certification. She is the daughter of Kimberle and Stephen Daniels.

Giaimo of Monroe is a 2011 Monroe High School graduate. She is pursuing a business administration degree while attending MCCC. Giaimo is the daughter of Giuseppa Giaimo and mother of Alessia and Layla.

Gucwa of Carleton is a 2013 graduate of Oscar A. Carlson High School. She will be studying nursing while attending MCCC. Gucwa is the daughter of Nancy Gucwa.

Marks of Monroe is a 2017 graduate of St. Mary Catholic Central High School. He is studying business management while attending MCCC. Marks sits on the Monroe Vicariate Evangelization and catechist committee and is also a part of Alpha programs at St. Charles and St. Joe’s. He volunteers at SMCC helping with coaching, Jazz Festival and helping with the auction. He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa at MCCC and is the son of Paul and Jami Marks.

Martinez of Monroe is a 2016 graduate of Monroe High School. He is studying business management while attending MCCC. Martinez is the son of Beatriz Guerrero-Cervantes.

Moody of Monroe is a 2013 graduate of St. Ursula Academy. She was a volunteer at the Teddy Bear Clinic in Ann Arbor Children’s Hands on Museum. Moody is the daughter of Julie Bartlett and mother to Charlee Moody.

Parrish of Monroe is a 2007 graduate of Monroe High School. She is studying nursing while attending MCCC. Parrish was a student nurse at the Monroe County Special Olympics in May. She is the daughter of Douglas and Corinne Diroff and wife to Alex Parrish.

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must maintain part-time enrollment status of six (6) credit hours or more and demonstrate financial need and/or be a student with academic promise. Preference will be given to students who are residents of Monroe County and are single parents or students raised in a single-parent household.
