Free Math ‘Boot Camp’ Sessions Available For Those Looking To Sharpen Skills

MONROE, Mich. – Monroe County Community College will host two free, five-week Math Boot Camp sessions this summer in preparation for the start of fall classes.

The Math Boot Camp sessions will meet every Tuesday and Thursday from July 16-Aug. 15.  Participants can choose a morning or evening time slot.  The morning time slot will meet from 9-10:30 a.m.  The evening time slot will meet from 6-7:30 p.m.

The Math Boot Camp sessions are free and open to the community.

“Although developed for MCCC students who have scored below the minimum Accuplacer test score required for placement into the Basic Mathematics Skills course (MATH 090), the Math Boot Camp is also a great opportunity for anyone to improve their math skills,” said Dr. Kevin Cooper, dean of the Science/Mathematics Division of the college.

“For example, students who will be taking a mathematics course in the fall might want to brush up on their math skills prior to the start of classes, or students who want to retake the Accuplacer test for possible placement in a higher level math class would benefit from the Math Boot Camp.”

Participants will work with whole numbers and integers, fractions, decimals and percentages during the camp.  Exercises and lessons will include meaningful real-world applications and problem solving.  In addition, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs of study and careers.

The final week of the camp sessions will be devoted to reviewing and preparation for the Accuplacer test.

“Really, anyone in the community who might be considering entering or re-entering the workforce or just wants to reduce their anxiety and build their confidence in their math abilities will benefit from the camp,” added Cooper.

The MCCC Math Boot Camp sessions are free, but registration is required by calling the the Office of Lifelong Learning at (734) 384-4127 or visiting the office in Room 286 of the La-Z-Boy Center (Building Z).
