Free Construction ‘Boot Camp’ To Highlight Career Options In High-growth Field

MONROE, Mich. – Monroe County Community College will host a free Construction Management and Trades “Boot Camp” at the Main Campus this summer.

The Construction Management and Trades Boot Camp is an opportunity for those who are interested in learning more about the training and skills needed for careers available in the high-growth field of construction.

The boot camp will be held on Saturday, June 22 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Career Technology Center (Building T) in Rooms 154 and 161. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

In addition to learning about the wide variety of jobs that need to be filled in this industry, hands-on activities during the Construction Management and Trades Boot Camp will provide an overview of the construction manager’s role and the responsibilities and those of others in the construction trades. Instructors will also discuss the wages that can be earned and the qualifications required to be successful in the construction profession.

According to the State of Michigan’s Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives, jobs in the construction trades for general workers and supervisors are expected to grow in the state by 10.4 percent by 2026, with 1,410 openings each year.  These jobs require short-term training beyond a high school diploma.

Construction and building inspector jobs are expected to increase by 11.6 percent in the same time frame, with 1,790 job openings annually. A postsecondary certificate or moderate-term training is needed for these jobs.

MCCC offers two short-term certificate program options in construction management technology.  The residential and light commercial construction certificate provides the basic skills necessary to gain entry-level employment with residential and light commercial contractors.  The heavy and industrial construction certificate is designed for more experienced construction personnel who wish to upgrade skills to gain management positions with large industrial employers.

MCCC also offers an associate degree program in construction management technology.  Graduates of the program will have sufficient knowledge of the construction process to make a valuable contribution in both the field and office environment. They will be prepared for entry-level employment in areas such as architectural drafter, assistant construction superintendent, construction inspector, construction supervisor, estimator, land planning technician, materials sales engineer, quality control technician, specifications writer trainee and structural engineering technician

The Construction Management and Trades Boot Camp is free, but preregistration is required. To register, please contact the MCCC Office of Lifelong Learning at (734) 384-4127 or visit Room 286 in the La-Z-Boy Center.
