MONROE, Mich. – Rita Coolidge, who burst onto the scene in the 1970s with signature hits that have captivated audiences for decades, will perform on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Monroe County Community College’s La-Z-Boy Center, Meyer Theater.
The La-Z-Boy Center is located on MCCC’s Main Campus at 1555 S. Raisinville Rd. in Monroe.
Among Coolidge’s most memorable hits are “(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher,” which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977; “We’re All Alone, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Chart in 1977, and “All Time High,” the theme from the 1983 James Bond film, “Octopussy,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard AC chart. And, in an eight-year romantic and artistic marriage for the ages, she and former husband Kris Kristofferson earned multiple Grammy Awards.
In May, three years after the publication of her acclaimed 2015 memoir, “Delta Lady,” Coolidge released “Safe in the Arms of Time,” her 18th solo album. The album marks her return to the songwriting that gave the world her still uncredited “piano coda” to Derek & the Dominoes’ “Layla.”
Three of the new album’s 12 songs were co-written by Coolidge and draw inspiration from her personal journeys. “Safe in the Arms of Time” is colored by her pivotal role in the Los Angeles singer-songwriter scene of the 1970s, where she made her bones as a top backup singer – that’s her on the refrains of Stephen Stills’ “Love the One You’re With” and Eric Clapton’s “After Midnight” – before embarking on a platinum-selling solo career.
