MONROE, Mich. – Monroe County Community College is still seeking applicants for its nuclear engineering technology program this Fall Semester, but all admissions materials must submitted by July 31, Parmeshwar (Peter) Coomar, dean of the Applied Science and Engineering Division, has announced.
The college is looking to accept 5-10 more applicants into the program for Fall Semester.
The orientation program for the new nuclear engineering technology cohort is set for August 15. Fall Semester begins Aug. 22.

The associate of applied science degree with specialization in nuclear engineering technology enables prospective students to seek employment as nuclear engineering technicians in various sectors of nuclear power industry.
The median annual wage nationally for nuclear technicians was $80,370 in May 2017, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics.
This specialization utilizes a learning approach that emphasizes both theory and hands-on skills necessary to function effectively in the technical environment of the industry. The program stresses effective oral and written communication, as well as related mathematics, science and technical skills.
The program is based on the Nuclear Uniform Curriculum Program, a uniform standard administered by the Nuclear Energy Institute. In addition to an associate degree, students who complete the program with an 80 percent score (B or better) in core classes will qualify for the NUCP Certificate, which is recognized industry wide. Graduates of this program will be prepared for entry-level employment in the following areas:
- Mechanical technician
- Electrical technician
- Instrumentation and control technician
Graduates with additional training experiences will be prepared for employment in the following areas:
- Radiation protection technician
- Non-licensed operator
- Senior reactor operator
In addition to the completion of this program, graduates will eventually need to pass appropriate background checks to be employable in the nuclear industry. Please check with the Office of Admission for details.
