MONROE, Mich. – The Monroe County Community College Board of Trustees has commended President Dr. Kojo A. Quartey on his performance and approved a new, 3-year employment agreement for him.
The board met in closed session with Quartey at its regular board meeting in June to conduct the evaluation, and last night MCCC Board Chair Lynette Dowler released the following statement after a special meeting regarding the employment agreement:
“The MCCC Board of Trustees feels that Dr. Quartey has been a leader among leaders in Monroe County. He has been an integral part of putting the ‘community’ in our community college. A few examples of successes that have occurred under his leadership include:
- The passage of a 5-year maintenance and improvement millage for MCCC by the Monroe County electorate;
- Long-term, sustainable capital improvements;
- Strong local, regional and national leadership in education, with student success as his top priority;
- A significant increase in the dual enrollment of high school students, including the development and subsequent expansion of direct college agreements, which allow high school students to take MCCC courses without ever leaving their high school;
- The launch of a new agriculture program in partnership with Michigan State University; and
- The installation of a campus-wide geothermal system with benefits that include a long system life and lower operating costs.”
The board approved the new employment agreement, which runs from Aug. 1, 2018 through July 31, 2021, by a vote of 5-0.
Quartey’s new annual base salary of $177,500 includes an equitable pay adjustment of 5.3 percent and begins to move him closer to the College and University Professionals Association for Human Resources’ salary average for presidents of about $195,000 per year, according to Dowler.
The contract is for a rolling three-year period. Beginning on August 1, 2019, and at the completion of each subsequent contract year, the contract will automatically add another contract year to the contract, maintaining the contract’s length of 3 years provided the president or Board of Trustees takes no action to modify the contract or give notice to terminate the contract.
Other components of the new employment agreement include:
- Quartey’s expense account for enhancing college community relations will be increased from $5,000 to $10,000 per year.
- His allotment of paid vacation days will increase from 22 to 25 per year.
- Quartey’s annual housing allowance will increase from $7,500 to $10,000.
- He will receive a longevity incentive of $16,000 if he remains employed through July 31, 2019. Beginning August 1, 2019, he will receive a longevity incentive of $30,000 after every 3 full years of service he completes.
Quartey began as MCCC president in the summer of 2013.
Trustee Dr. James DeVries was absent from the board meeting. There is one vacant trustee position due to the resignation of Marjorie Kreps on June 27.
