MONROE, Mich. – The Foundation at Monroe County Community College has awarded the LaVerne B. Norton Scholarship to Jodi Biggs, Katelyn Greiner, Presly Kreps, Brooke Lambrix, Katie Lay, Kristin Lindquist, Alexa Marchese, Amy McBee, Ashley Richards, Haylee Root, Bayley Starkman, Allissa Sudak. The $2,000 scholarships are to be used for tuition, books, and fees.
Biggs of Samaria is a General Education Degree graduate. Biggs will be pursuing an associate’s degree of science while attending MCCC, before transferring to a four year university to study chemical engineering. Biggs is the Vice President of the Math and Science Society at MCCC.
Greiner of Temperance is a 2016 graduate of Bedford High School. Greiner will be studying nursing while attending MCCC. Greiner participated in Bedford High School’s marching band and was a student council representative. Katelyn is the daughter of Holly Steele and Dana Greiner.
Kreps of La Salle is a 2017 graduate of Saint Mary’s Catholic Central. Kreps will be studying nursing while attending MCCC. Kreps is a member of the Junior Livestock Association and Phi Thetta Kappa. Presly is the daughter of Dean and Penelope Kreps.
Lambrix of South Rockwood is a 2007 graduate of Jefferson High School. Lambrix is studying nursing while attending MCCC. She has been a Writing Fellow at MCCC for two consecutive semesters. She is the wife of Ben Lambrix and mother of Peyton Lambrix.
Lay of Monroe is a 2005 Monroe High School graduate. She is exploring multiple career options while attending MCCC. Lay graduated Magna Cum Laude from Monroe High School as well as participating in National Honors Society. Lay is the spouse of the late Steven Lay and mother of Amanda and Natalie Lay.
Lindquist of Dundee is a 2000 graduate of Lincoln Consolidated High School. Lindquist will be studying nursing while attending MCCC. Lindquist has previously achieved an associated degree in pharmacology. She was named Employee of the Year for the Congenital Heart Center at the University of Michigan in 2016. Kristin is the wife of Eric Lindquist and mother of Lucas Lindquist.
Marchese of Monroe is a graduate of Monroe High School. Marchese is exploring multiple career options while attending MCCC. In high school, Marchese was a member of the National Honors Society, Compassion for Critters Club, and the World Language Cooperative. She also graduated Magna Cum Laude and as a Senior Scholar from Monroe High School. Alexa is the daughter of Holly Marchese.
McBee of La Salle is a 1995 graduate of Monroe High School. McBee will be studying nursing while attending MCCC. McBee actively volunteers in Trinity Lutheran School for student programs.
Richards of Monroe is a 2010 General Education Degree graduate. Richards is studying fine arts while attending MCCC. Richards has participated in the Spirit of Giving Program at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, as well as volunteering at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital. Richards has one daughter named Hannah.
Root of Petersburg is a 2018 graduate of Summerfield High School. Root will be exploring multiple career options while attending MCCC. She has participated in multiple charity works through her youth group in Milan. Haylee is the daughter of Mary and Patrick Root.
Starkman of Newport is a 2018 graduate of Jefferson High School. Starkman will be exploring multiple career options while attending MCCC. Starkman was Miss Poppy for the Wyandotte American Legion, post 217. The Miss Poppy Contest is an event for Junior Auxiliary members who develop local programs to promote the Auxiliary memorial poppy. Bayley is the daughter of Patricia Venier-Starkman and the late Reuben Starkman.
Sudak of Monroe is a 2018 graduate of Jefferson High School. Sudak will be studying accounting while attending MCCC. Sudak participates in Girl Scouts of America as a co-leader. Allissa is the daughter of Penny Watkins and Kevin Sudak.
To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must maintain part-time enrollment status of six (6) credit hours or more and demonstrate financial need and/or a student with academic promise. Preference will be given to students who are residents of Monroe County and are single-parents or students raised in a single-parent household.
