Michael E. Newman Memorial Scholarship Established at Monroe County Community College

MONROE, Mich. – Monroe County Community Credit Union (MCCCU) Board of Directors have established the Michael E. Newman Memorial Scholarship at Monroe County Community College.

The scholarship was created in memory of Newman, who was the President/CEO at MCCCU. He started his career in the financial industry as a “Courier” and worked his way up to President/CEO.

Mike’s career goal was to become President/CEO. He knew that in order to achieve that goal, he would need to continue his education. He understood the value of education and always encouraged his employees to continue to take every opportunity to learn. He often told the staff at MCCCU that they should ‘work today for the job you want tomorrow’.

The scholarship was created by an initial gift of $20,000 to The Foundation at MCCC. An additional $1,000 was given to immediately fun an annual scholarship the first year.

To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must:

  • be a member of the MCCCU.
  • have and maintain a 2.8 GPA or higher during the scholarship year.
  • maintain at least a part-time enrollment at Monroe County Community College during the scholarship year. Part-time enrollment is defined as 6 contact hours or more per semester.
  • Financial need will be considered in awarding the scholarship.

Newman held a Bachelor’s of Science in Finance from Kennedy-Western University and was a graduate of the University Of Wisconsin Graduate School Of Business in conjunction with the Credit Union National Association. He always took every opportunity to learn new things and continue to better himself. He would be honored to know that through this scholarship he will be assisting someone else in their education advancements and ultimately one day achieving their career goals.

Newman began his career at MCCCU in 1983, prior to that he worked for First National/Security Bank. He was very active in the Monroe community supporting leadership roles as Chairman of the Board, Downriver Chapter of Credit Unions; Former Chairman of the Board, Chamber of Commerce of Monroe; instrumental in the United Way Regional Alignment for Monroe and Lenawee County; Michigan Credit Union League State Federal Issues Committee member; member of Exchange Club of Monroe; member of ProMedica of Monroe Philanthropy Committee; Vice Chairman, Michigan Credit Union League Governmental and Political Affairs Committee; Vice President, Community Foundation of Monroe.

Newman was married for 38 years to his wife Debbie Newman. They have a son Chad (Amy) Newman, daughter Jennifer (Carson) Poupard and two grandchildren Brooks & Briggs Poupard.
