MONROE, Mich. – Monroe County Community College will hold a free session for employers, educators, workforce development officials, elected officials and veterans agency representatives about the U.S. Department of Labor’s Registered Apprenticeship System on April 6 from 9 a.m. to noon in the atrium of the La-Z-Boy Center.
The session, titled “Build Your Workforce with Registered Apprenticeships” will outline the steps involved in developing and taking advantage of apprenticeships, which can be accomplished at the local level in partnership with MCCC.
The Registered Apprenticeship System has been utilized to meet the needs of America’s skilled workforce for more than 75 years. It is a unique, flexible training system that combines job-related, technical instruction with structured, on-the-job learning experiences.
It is a leader in preparing American workers to compete in a global 21st century economy because it keeps pace with advancing technologies and innovations in training and human resource development.
The system is highly active in traditional manufacturing trades, but it is also instrumental in the training and development of other emerging industries.
Scheduled speakers include Dr. Kojo A. Quartey, president, Monroe County Community College; Parmeshwar (Peter) Coomar, dean of the Applied Science and Engineering Division at MCCC; Russell Davis, state director of the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship; Cameron Albring, administrative assistant for MCCC’s apprenticeship programs and the college’s ASET Division; Barry Kinsey, director of workforce development at MCCC, and Tim Lake, president and CEO of the Monroe County Business Development Corp.
At the session, there will be a “meet and greet” with Marc L. DeCoster, apprenticeship training representative for the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship.
Following session, participants will have the option to tour MCCC’s Career Technology Center, a 60,000-square foot facility that opened in 2013 and provides state-of-the-art classrooms and lab space for the college’s applied science and engineering technology programs.
