MCCC Releases Summer camps Lineup for 2017

Monroe, Mich. – Monroe County Community College has released the lineup for its 2017 FUNdamentals Summer Camps program.
The college will host 19 camps on Main Campus at 1555 S. Raisnville Rd. in Monroe, and one camp at Mind Body Balance, in downtown Monroe. Registration for all camps is one week prior to the start date.
           
Camps on Main Campus      

  • AR 15 Rifle Camp. $99; June 26-30; for boys and girls grades 5-12; 9 a.m.-noon. Campers will gain the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for safe use of an AR 15 rifle for target shooting. A trip to the firing range will be held the last day of camps for those who have attended all classes. Cost includes use of rifle, ear/eye protection and ammunition at the firing range. Instructor: Wayne Blank.
  • Aspiring Artist Camp. $79; two sections, July17-20 and July 24-27; for boys and girls grades 3-10; 1-4 p.m. Campers will learn basic drawing skills such as shading, color and perspectives, as well as basic painting skills. The camp concludes with an art gallery show where campers will display works of art for family and friends. Instructor: Steve Ryder.
  • Automotive Camp. $24; July 10-14; for boys and girls grades 9-12; 1-4 p.m. Campers will cover a range of topics including shop safety, draining fluids and removing shields as well as an engine swap with fluid checks and Roush’s very own performance trailer. Campers will also discuss and perform simple repairs, problem analysis and career opportunities in the field. Campers must wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and closed-toe shoes to ensure safety.
  • Basic Pistol Safety Camp. $89; July 10-14; for boys and girls grades 5-12; 9 a.m.-noon. Campers will learn the basic knowledge, skills and attitude for operating a pistol safely. They will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling, pistol parts, operation, shooting fundamentals and rage rules as well as how to shoot revolvers and semiautomatic pistols from the bench rest position and two handed standing positions. A trip to the firing range will be held the last day of camp for those who have attended all classes. Cost includes use of rifle, ear/eye protection and ammunition at the firing range.   • Basketball Camp. $69; July 24-27 (for boys and girls grades 2-5) 9 a.m.-noon; July 24-27 (for boys and girls grades 6-8) 1-4 p.m. This camp will focus on developing fundamental skills in a competitive and fun environment. Campers will receive instruction in shooting, passing, ball handling, rebounding, defense, offensive concepts, leadership and teamwork. Campers will also participate in individual contests. The camp is designed to make each athlete a better player and person. Instructor: Gretchen Elliot.
  • Building Construction Camp. FREE; two sections, June 19-23 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. for boys and girls grades 9-12. This camp integrates safety instruction, building design, a hands-on project, and an introduction to all aspects of the trades. Campers are provided with safety equipment and tools as part of an overview to the industry’s most highly skilled craft workers. Campers must wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and closed-toe shoes to ensure safety.
  • CADdesign Camp. $24; two sections, July 10-14 9:30a.m.-Noon and 1-1:30 p.m. for boys and girls grades 8-12. This camp will give campers a look into some of the skills and tools used in the mechanical design process. They will learn about 2D drawing, using the DraftSight software as well as create 3D drawings and animations using SolidWorks. In addition, campers will see how 3D printers create models.
  • Child Babysitting Safety Camp. $89; June 26; for boys and girls grades 6-10; 1-3 p.m. Campers will learn topics such as babysitting as a business, safety and injury prevention, leadership, playtime, basic caregiving skills for infants and young children, first aid, hands only CPR, and performance and written evaluation. All supplies are included in the cost including ASHI certification, manual, first aid supplies, and a CPR practice tool and bag. Instructor: Christine Chickeral.
  • Cooking Camp. $99; two sections, June 19-24 (for boys and girls grades 3-6) 9 a.m.-noon, and June 26-30 (for boys and girls grades 7-10) 9 a.m.-noon. Campers will be able to take their cooking skills to the next level by learning all the basic cooking methods while preparing a different meal daily. Campers will also learn kitchen safety and sanitation skills. Campers must wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and closed-toe shoes to ensure safety.
  • Dissection Camp. $99; July 24-28; for boys and girls grades 4-6; 8:30 a.m.-noon. Campers will have an opportunity to dissect a heart, lungs, stomach, eyes and chick legs. Each day will also feature related topics and creative activities to accompany the organ system such as CPR, nutrition, and health occupations. Gloves, dissection supplies, and materials will be provided. Instructor: Terri Langton.
  • Firearm Safety Camp. $79; June 19-23; for boys and girls grades 5-12; 9 a.m.-noon. Campers will get a basic instruction to guns and gun safety. They will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling, rifle parts and operation, shooting fundamentals and range rules. The emphasis on the camp will be safety. A trip to the firing range will be held the last day of camp for those who have attended all classes. Cost includes use of rifle, ear/eye protection and ammunition at the firing range. Instructor: Wayne Blank.
  • Guitar Camp. $79; July 10-14; for boys and girls grades 5-12; 8 a.m.-noon. Campers will learn the names of the strings and how to tune a guitar. In addition, they will learn basic major and minor chords and basic chord progressions that will enable them to play hundreds of songs. Depending on skill level, campers could learn songs each day while others may need some additional practice at home. Campers must provide their own electric or acoustic guitar and bring it each day to camp.
  • Metrology (Science of Measurement) Camp. FREE; Two sections, July 10-14 9:30 a.m.-noon and 1-1:30 p.m. for boys and girls grades 8-12. Campers will learn how to design and run measurement calibrations to determine accuracy, precision, reliability and traceability. Campers will experience hands-on activities barrowing concepts from physics, math, chemistry, engineering, and some biology and medicine.
  • Photography Camp. $79; July 17-21; for boys and girls grades 5-12; 9:30 a.m.-noon. Campers will explore the world through a camera lens and learn about the different parts of the camera. Topics such as the basics of ISO, exposure, composition and flash will be covered. The camp is designed for all skill levels and will spend some time in the computer lab using Photoshop. Campers must bring a camera. Instructor: Kevin Trickey
  • Theater Camp. $89; July 17-28 Mon-Fri; for boys and girls grades 5-12; 8 a.m.-noon. Campers will learn the fundamentals of the theatric process. They will cover auditioning, rehearsal, basic make-up and costuming, basic lighting and set creating. The camp concludes with a short original performance for family and friends. Instructor: Steve Ryder.
  • VEX IQ Advanced Robotics Camp. $69; Aug 14-17; for boys and girls grades 3-8; 3-9 p.m. Campers should have some robotics background on either the VEX IQ or LEGO platform. Camp will be designed around the 2017-18 VEX IQ game. Campers will be prepared to compete in VEX IQ at an advanced level. Campers should have designed and recorded a viable competition robot by the end of the week. Campers will need to bring a lunch each day.
  • VEX IQ Beginner Robotics Camp. $69; three sections, June 26-29 8 a.m.-2 p.m., July 10-13 3-9 p.m., Aug 7-10 8 a.m.-2 p.m. for boys and girls grades 3-8. Campers will get a general robotics introduction using the VEX IQ robotics platform. They will construct at least two robots to be used to perform various functions, including autonomous driving, lifting objects, driving on a course and avoiding obstacles. Campers will also learn graphical programming and use of sensors as a component in robotics movement. In addition, they will receive an introduction to industry norms and receive tele-operated robotics driving time in addition to autonomous operation. Campers will need to bring a lunch each day.
  • Welding Camp. FREE; two sections, June 19-23 9:30 a.m.-noon, and 1-1:30 p.m. for boys and girls grades 9-12. Campers will learn the basics of welding technology with an emphasis on shielded metal arc (stick) welding and gas metal arc (MIG) wire welding on low carbon steel. They will gain hands-on experience with welding equipment, including the opportunity to complete a welding art project that you will take home. Previous welding experience is not necessary. Campers must wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and closed-toe shoes to ensure safety.

Camp Off Campus

  • willPower for girlPower Camp. $79; July 24-28; for girls grades 5-8; 1-3 p.m. Camp meets off campus at Mind Body Balance, 105 East Front Street, Ste. 304, in downtown Monroe. The camp is comprised of five, two-hour sessions with a celebration session on the final day. The goal is to empower young women to find inspiration, strength and confidence in the fusion of movement and philosophy which is derived from willpower and grace.

Each session must have a minimum number of participants for the camp to run.  MCCC reserves the right to change instructors at any time.  All campers will receive a camp T-shirt.
