MONROE, Mich. – Monroe County Community College has awarded Presidential Scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year to 10 outstanding area students.
The students include: Courtney Dunbar, Jacqueline Foshag, Maya Gaynier, Maiya Hegyi, Jessica Marimpietri, Amy Matthes, Andrew Scholl, Alexandria Wilburn, Kaitlin Wylie and Evan Zub.
The Presidential Scholarship is a two-year scholarship awarded to Monroe County students who have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership abilities, both in the classroom and in the community. The scholarship is to be used for tuition, laboratory and service fees. Recipients are required to maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 while enrolled in at least 12 credit hours of coursework per semester.
Dunbar of Carleton is a 2017 graduate of Airport High School who will study elementary education at MCCC. While attending high school she was a member of the National Honor Society, DECA, Interact Club and Student Council and was on the varsity volleyball and softball teams. She received the Huron League All Academic Honorable Mention-Volleyball award. She is the daughter of Michael and Ellen Dunbar.
Foshag of Monroe is a 2017 graduate of Ida High School who will study biology at MCCC. While attending high school, she received a scholar athlete award and a William Capaul Academic Letter and was involved in the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 4-H and Bluestreak Buddy Program. She is the daughter of Dawn and Joe Foshag.
Gaynier of Monroe is a 2017 valedictorian graduate of Lutheran High School in Westland and is undecided about her major. She is a member of the Heritage Baptist Church Choir, National Honor Society and is Student Council vice president. She received the Tyler Duvall Character Award. She is the daughter of Craig and Beverly Gaynier.
Hegyi of Monroe a 2017 graduate of Monroe High School is pursuing a career in education. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Interact Club and lettered in golf for the Monroe High School Girls’ Golf Team. She has also volunteered at Ellis Library every summer since the 6th grade. She is the daughter of Michael Hegyi and Juliette Hegyi.
Marimpietri of Monroe is a 2017 graduate of Monroe Christian Homeschool and will major in graphic design or computer science. She was involved in Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Monroe County 4-H, Junior Olympic Archery Division, Monroe Rod & Gun Youth Conservation, Faithful Friends, Critter Science Investigators, REAACT, New Horizons, Terra Quest, Sharp Shooters, Shooting Sports Association and Youth Leadership Board. She also received the Frank Hawley Leadership Award, 2nd Runner-Up 4-H Queen and 4-H County Award. She is the daughter of Lisa and John Marimpietri.
Matthes of Monroe is a 2017 graduate of Ida High School and will major in accounting. While attending high school, she was a member of the National Honor Society, 4-H and the basketball, received a scholar athlete award and was a member on the honor roll. She is a volunteer in a soup kitchen, at bingo at a Lutheran home and for the Monroe County Opportunity Program. She is the daughter of Alan and Lori Matthes.
Scholl of Dundee is a 2017 graduate of Dundee High School and will study agricultural business. While attending high school, he was a member of the National Honor Society and Future Farmers of America. He received the FFA Outstanding Junior Award, FFA Green Hand Award, FFA Michigan State Academic Excellence Award, LCCA Varsity Wrestling Sportsmanship Award and LCCA Varsity Wrestling Scholar Athlete Award. He is the son of Tim and Karen Scholl.
Wilburn of Monroe is a 2017 graduate of Jefferson High School and will study hotel and restaurant management. While attending high school she was a member of the robotics team, bowling team, National Honor Society and National Society of High School Scholars and was on the honor roll and had perfect attendance. She is the daughter of James Wilburn and Kathy Bley.
Wylie of Petersburg is a 2017 graduate of Summerfield High School and will study to become physician assistant while attending MCCC. While attending high school, she was a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Varsity golf team, Deerfield Free Methodist Church Youth Group, Peer 2 Peer Group, Prom Committee and high school newspaper and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and American Red Cross blood drives. She received numerous awards, including honor roll for all four years of high school, scholar athlete awards and Coach’s Award in golf. Her parents are Crystal and James Wylie.
Zub of Monroe is a 2017 graduate of Monroe High School and will study supply chain management and logistics. He is a volunteer at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church, God Works soup kitchen and Lutheran High Food Pantry and taught Learn to Skate at Monroe Multi-Sports Complex. He was team captain of the United Varsity Hockey team and team captain of the MHS varsity baseball team. He is the son of Sherri Zub and Wally Zub.
