MONROE, Mich. – The Foundation at Monroe County Community College has awarded the LaVerne B. Norton Scholarship to Angela Carter, Balbina Crumley, Jennifer Freeman, Tramaine Hardnett, Tanness Headrick, Jeffery Karas, Ian Lawson, James Parriet, Emily Rentschler, Dixie Thomas and Allison Warner. The $2,000 scholarships are to be used for tuition, books, and fees.
Carter, of Monroe, a 1998 graduate of Lincoln High School, is studying Business Management at MCCC. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and helps with fundraisers. She is married to Chris Carter and daughter of Reccia Amolsch.
Crumley, of Monroe, is a 1986 graduate of Summerfield High School. She is studying Respiratory Therapy at MCCC. She is the mother of Landon Crumley.
Freeman, of Monroe, a 1995 graduate of Monroe High School, is pursuing her studies in Business Management at MCCC. She is currently on the Presidents Student Advisory Group, is the student voice on the Special Population Advisory Committee and is a note taker for the Learning Assistance Lab at MCCC. Jennifer was selected by the faculty in the Business Division as the Outstanding Student for Administrative Profession 2016-2017. She is the proud mother to Jonathan Freeman.
Hardnett, of Ida, a 1998 graduate of Ida High School, is studying nursing at MCCC. She has volunteered with the Salvation Army and Associating Charities. She is the daughter of Rosemary Hardnett and Tony Wilson. She is the mother to King and Travion Edwards.
Headrick, of Monroe, is pursuing her studies in the CIS: Computer Science program at MCCC.
Karas, of Carleton, a 2006 graduate of Airport High School, is pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Automotive Engineering at MCCC. He is the son of Judith and Ronald Karas and the father to Mila Karas.
Lawson, of Ida, a 2016 Ida High School graduate, is studying accounting at MCCC. While attending college, his is involved with the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. He is the son of Brenda Crawford and Alan Lawson.
Parriet, of Monroe, a 2012 Monroe High School graduate, is pursuing an Associate of Science degree at MCCC. He is President of MCCC’s Drama Club. He is the son of Rhonda Parriet and Timothy Parriet.
Rentschler, of Carleton, a 2017 Airport High School graduate is pursuing a career in the Culinary Skills and Management program at MCCC. While attending high school she was accepted into the NTHS (National Technical Honor Society) and received the outstanding student award. She is the daughter of Cynthia Rentschler and Michael Rentschler.
Thomas, of Monroe, a 1999 Jefferson Learning Center graduate, is pursuing a CIS: System Administration Specialist degree at MCCC. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at MCCC and has volunteered at her children schools, local churches and domestic violence shelters. She is the mother to Damien and Kordell.
Warner, of Monroe, a 2017 graduate of Jefferson High School is pursuing an Associate of Science degree at MCCC. She has been a member of Student Government as well as the Math & Science Society at MCCC. She is the daughter of Juli Williams and Douglas Warner Jr.
To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must maintain part-time enrollment status of six (6) credit hours or more and demonstrate financial need and/or a student with academic promise. Preference will be given to students who are residents of Monroe County and are single-parents or students raised in a single-parent household.
