MCCC Expands Scholarship Opportunities, Simplifies Application Processes

New Trustee Merit Scholarship Awarded Based on ACT or SAT Score; No Separate Application

MONROE, Mich. – Monroe County Community College has expanded scholarship opportunities with a new Trustee Merit Scholarship Program and simplified the application processes for most scholarships offered by the institution and The Foundation at MCCC.

The Trustee Merit Scholarship Program, which was approved last week by the Board of Trustees, provides scholarships based on ACT or SAT scores for students who are enrolling full-time at MCCC for the first time and recent high school graduates who have dual enrolled at MCCC.  Students must be Monroe County, Michigan residents, and their ACT or SAT scores can be no more than five years old. The scholarships are renewable for a second year based on satisfactory academic progress.

Below are the ACT and SAT score ranges for Trustee Merit Scholarship Program awards and the approximate percent of tuition and fees covered based on 2015-16 figures:

  • ACT score of 20-21 or SAT score of 940-1010:  $1,000 award, which covers approximately 34 percent of tuition and fees
  • ACT score of 22-23 or SAT score of 1020-1080:  $1,250 award, which covers approximately 43 percent of tuition and fees
  • ACT score of 24 or higher or SAT score of 1090 or higher:  $1,500 award, which covers approximately 51 percent of tuition and fees

There is no separate application for the Trustee Merit Scholarship Program.  To be automatically considered, prospective new students must simply apply for admission and send ACT or SAT scores, as well as high school transcripts, to the Office of Admissions and Guidance by April 15, 2016.  Those who qualify to receive the scholarship must register for Fall Semester classes by June 30, 2016.

The Trustee Merit Scholarship is automatically renewable for a consecutive second year provided the recipient has completed a minimum of 24 credit hours with a 2.5 cumulative grade point average by the end of the Spring Semester of his or her freshman year.

In addition, MCCC will continue to offer two “full-ride” institutional scholarships programs that cover all tuition and fees – the Presidential Scholarship Program and the Performing Music Scholarship Program.  The Instructional Scholarship Program was redeveloped into the Trustee Merit Scholarship Program to expand access to MCCC scholarship opportunities for Monroe County residents.

To be eligible for the Presidential Scholarship Program, a prospective student must be a Monroe County resident, have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 or better, demonstrate leadership qualities and participation in school and/or community affairs, and enroll for 12 or more credit hours per semester.  A Presidential Scholarship is automatically renewable provided a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA is achieved by end of Spring Semester of the freshman year.  To apply for the Presidential Scholarship, prospective students should go to the scholarship area of the MCCC website at http://www.monroeccc.edu/financialaid/scholarships.htm

To be eligible for the Performing Music Scholarship Program, a prospective student must be a Monroe County resident and audition, enroll as a full-time student and participate in the College/Community Symphonic Band or Agora Chorale.  A Performing Music Scholarship is automatically renewable provided a 2.2 or higher cumulative GPA is achieved by end of Spring Semester of the freshman year.  To apply for the Performing Music Scholarship, prospective students should contact the college’s Humanities/Social Sciences Division at (734) 384-4153.

The college also offers a number of other institutional scholarships, and The Foundation at MCCC awards more than 80 scholarships annually totaling about $100,000 to new and continuing students.

The application process for these scholarships has been simplified with a new, shortened general application that can be submitted completely online and takes roughly 20 minutes to complete.  Scholarships are available for new students who have already been admitted to the college, as well as continuing students.  The general scholarship application is available at http://www.monroeccc.edu/financialaid/scholarships.htm

The deadline for applying for scholarships other than the Trustee Merit Scholarship is April 1, 2016.

When applying for scholarships that require proof of financial need, prospective and continuing students must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at https://fafsa.ed.gov/.
