MCCC Awards the LaVerne B. Norton Scholarship

MONROE, Mich. – Monroe County Community College has awarded the LaVerne B. Norton Scholarship to Caitlin Baumann, Jaynie Gauthier, Cassondra Kiley, Kayla Maddox, Casey Mayes, Joleen Powers, David Springford, Dixie Thomas, Bonnie Tibai, Brionna Walach and Brooklyn Wright. The $2,000 scholarships are to be used for tuition, books, and fees.

Baumann, of Monroe, is a 2011 graduate of Monroe High School. She is currently studying Nursing at MCCC. She was an active member in 4-H for twelve years, participated in the Monroe County Bed Races, “Granny’s Stash” and helped build homes for Habitat for Humanity. She is treasurer of the Student Nurses Association and is the class representative in the nursing program at MCCC. She is the daughter of Michelle and Dan Baumann.

Gauthier, of South Rockwood, is studying Business Management at MCCC. She volunteers helping the elderly, tutors high school students and teaches classes through her church’s youth group program. She is the daughter of Nancy Gauthier.

Kiley, of Monroe, is studying Nursing at MCCC. She helped establish a MCCC chapter of the international service organization and is a member of the Kiwanis Club. She is the daughter of Mary Jo and Larry Kiley.

Maddox, of Lambertville, is pursuing her studies in Nursing at MCCC. She is an active member of the volunteer organization Community Emergency Response Team, a licensed EMT and a certified Search and Rescue Level 2 Technician. She is the daughter of Joshua Maddox and April Maddox.

Mayes, of Monroe, is studying Nursing at MCCC. He is a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and God Works. He is son of Allen Mayes and brother to Kyle Mayes.

Powers, of Temperance, is pursuing her studies in the CIS: Computer Science program at MCCC. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and has coached and assisted a variety of sports team that her children have been involved with, including mentoring her son’s 2nd grade robotics team. She is the mother of Jordyn, Kaylee, Jayme and Katelynn.

Springford, of Newport, is studying Nursing at MCCC. He is currently a member of the Student Nurses Association at MCCC. He is the blessed husband of Angela Springford and father to Isabella and Vincent.

Thomas, of Monroe, is studying CIS: System Administration Specialist at MCCC. She is a volunteer in her sons’ classrooms. She has two sons, Kordell Cannon and Damien Stewart.

Tibai, of Monroe, is studying Business Management at MCCC. She is a member of the Community Service Club and the Treasurer of the Student Veterans Organization at MCCC. She is the daughter of Mary and Andrew Adams, Daughter-in-law to Cheryl Tibai, wife of Christopher, mother to Misty and Lilly and step-mother to Christopher, Thomas, Theresa and Lucas.

Walach, of Newport, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She has been involved at her church, MMBC, March of Dimes and Walk for Autism Speaks. She is the daughter of Jennifer Walach and granddaughter of Diane Walach.

Wright, of Newport, is currently a participant in the Upward Bound Alumni Program as a tutor. She is the daughter of Juanita Wright and Timothy Wright.

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must maintain part-time enrollment status of six (6) credit hours or more and demonstrate financial need and/or a student with academic promise. Preference will be given to students who are residents of Monroe County and are single-parents or students raised in a single-parent household.
