In 2023-24, Monroe County Community College, in partnership with the City of Monroe and the City of Luna Pier, is implementing a federal Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Planning Grant of $45,000 from the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG).
The grant funds are being used to provide programmatic and advocacy support for electric vehicle planning and EV charging infrastructure in Monroe County. In addition, the grant funds are being used to further educate MCCC students and residents throughout the region on EV technician and engineering technology curriculum being created by MCCC and other EV Jobs Academy partner institutions, as well as the benefits that new EV-related jobs will provide to local, regional and state economies. Prospective MCCC EV courses have been identified, and review continues leading up to final approval. These include Introduction to EV, Battery Systems, EV Propulsion and EV Advanced Diagnostics.
Included in the educational and promotional tactics are public forums on EV technology, media awareness efforts, collateral and an electric vehicle show that took place in the Fall 2023.
