Students, faculty, staff and the community are invited to participate in Monroe County Community College's Culture and Current Affairs Series in March. All of the events are free and all are open to the public.
On Wednesday, April 10, at 10 a.m. Paul M. Hedeen, retired dean of humanities and social sciences at MCCC, will discuss "Ukranians in Michigan," a book he cowrote with Maryna Hedeen in 2023. He was a Fulbright Scholar in Ukraine in 2008. His critical and creative writing has appeared in numerous magazines and journals including The North American Review, Confrontation, Rosebud, Philosophy and Literature, Modern Fiction Studies, and many others and coedited (with DG Myers) "Unrelenting Readers: The New Poet-critics," authored two novels, "The Knowledge Tree" and "The Butterfly" and published two poetry collections: "When I Think About Rain" and "Under a Night Sky." On Thursday, April 18, at 3 p.m. David Serio, educator and public programmer at Arab American National Museum will present "Arab American History and Culture," in recognition of National Arab American Month. In this presentation, Serio will explore elements of history, culture, and the immigration of Arab Americans to the United States. He will also define the Arab World, highlight ethnic and religious diversity within the Arab World/Arab American community, and discuss layers of identity. He holds a master's degree in Near Eastern Studies and Arabic from Wayne State University. In his role at AANM, he conducts educational presentations and workshops both in-person and online. He leads the planning and implementation of youth programs and cultural events. On Monday, April 22 at 3 p.m. Maddison Goulet, health educator, Monroe County Health Department will present "Supplements for Overall Health" as part of MCCC's Health and Wellness initiative. She will discuss vitamins, minerals and protein supplements for overall health. Her academic background includes earning both her undergraduate degree in public health education and a master of public health degree at Central Michigan University. Her passion lies in working collaboratively with others, educating individuals to enhance their health and wellness and working with youth and advocating to ensure their voices are heard.
