Summer Program

UPWARD BOUND SUMMER PROGRAM FOR ALL UB PARTICIPANTS

(Rising Freshman through Rising Seniors)

Undoubtedly, the most influential component of the Upward Bound program is the summer program. The Upward Bound summer program is a six-week component designed to expose the students to a college campus learning environment.  This experience provides participants with many opportunities for intellectual, personal and social development.

***TRANSPORTATION FROM THE STUDENT'S IN-DISTRICT ADDRESS TO MONROE COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE IS PROVIDED AND IS A FREE SERVICE OFFERED TO THOSE STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN THE SUMMER COMPONENT.***

During the summer, UB participants have the opportunity to take academic preparation courses in science, math, writing and a foreign language, all of which are designed to give them a head start in school for the following school year. During the program, students are encouraged to adopt effective study habits that will follow them throughout their high school career and beyond.

Each Friday in the Summer Program, the students participate in a field trip. Therefore, we refer to these days as “Field Trip Fridays.” These are day trips and due to this, we are limited on the distance we can go, but we try to make the day fun, fresh, educational, informative, and exciting for the students. These trips may include college campus tours, visits to cultural and historical venues in our area, and visits to local businesses for career exploration events. In past years, we have visited the following places on Fridays:

Lourdes University, University of Toledo, Michigan State University, Eastern Michigan University, University of Michigan, Cedar Point, Tenneco Engineering Department, DTE Monroe Power Plant, Cleveland State University, Oakland University, Camp Miakonda, Wayne State University, Holocaust Memorial Center, Monroe Evening News, Comcast, Wayne State University, Imagination Station, Mercy Memorial Hospital, Henry Ford Museum, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Bowling Green State University, Siena Heights University, and many more!
