Upward Bound Program at MCCC

What is Upward Bound?

Upward Bound is a program funded by the U.S. Department of Education that prepares high school students for post-secondary education. Established in 2007, the Monroe County Community College Upward Bound Program now serves 172 students in grades 9-12. Students are enrolled from our target high schools, Monroe High School and Jefferson High School, both located in Monroe, Michigan and Airport High School located in Carleton, Michigan. Upward Bound is a challenging, preparatory program for students who demonstrate the ability or desire to attend college. All program services are free for participants.

Mission

The mission of the Monroe County Community College Upward Bound program is to assist students in grades nine through twelve in the successful completion of high school and to prepare them for post-secondary education by providing academic support, college preparation, social, cultural and career exploration.

Candidates must complete the application packet that can be obtained through your high school counselor or our office. After applications have been reviewed, eligible candidates, along with their parents/guardian, will be scheduled for a personal interview. After careful consideration of grades, teacher recommendations, and the personal interview, students will be selected. Those not selected will be placed on a waiting list.

The MCCC Upward Bound project selects students in the 9th and 10th grades.

Applications for admission are accepted from students attending Airport High School, Jefferson High School, and Monroe High School. The Upward Bound staff will conduct classroom presentations, meet with high school guidance counselors and other administrators, as well as talk to students during lunch and classroom breaks to promote the program and recruit students.

Interested students are given program applications to complete. The completed applications are used to determine eligibility for the program. An interview is scheduled for the student and the parent/guardian to complete the admission process. Once a student has been admitted to the program there is no need to reapply or re-qualify annually. As long as the student maintains satisfactory progress they remain in the program through graduation from high school. The recruitment period begins in the fall semester and continues until all available slots have been filled.

Monroe County Community College Upward Bound Program is a federally funded program. Students are selected based on the following criteria established by the U.S. Department of Education:

  1. Student has completed the eighth grade.
  2. Student is/or will be in grade 9 or 10 at Monroe High School, Jefferson High School or Airport High School.
  3. Student is interested in attending a college/university after high school graduation.
  4. The student’s parent or legal guardian(s) has not graduated with a four-year degree or higher from a college/university.
  5. The student’s parent or legal guardian meets program income requirements.  Income requirements are based on the percentage of high income and low income students currently participating in the school’s Upward Bound Program.
