Monroe County Middle College Recognized As MCCC Supporter Of The Year

MONROE, Mich. – The Monroe County Community College Board of Trustees unanimously voted during its regular meeting late last month to recognize Monroe County Middle College as MCCC's College Supporter of the Year.

MCMC was founded in 2009 as a public, early/middle college and the first option of its kind in the county. Located on MCCC’s main campus, MCMC provides a high school option for Monroe County students who have identified an interest in health science or STEM career pathway. Students can also earn up to 60 transferable college credits and/or an associate degree by the end of their 13th year of school. Instruction at MCMC is provided by highly qualified, Michigan-certified teachers and MCCC professors and adjunct faculty

In recognizing the contributions of MCMC to the college, the Board of Trustees noted the high level of involvement of the students in the MCCC campus community. Students serve as members of Student Government, writing fellows, supplemental instructors, lab assistants and student assistants. Their commitment to these activities have earned them a number of academic awards and recognition from other organizations as well.

“Monroe County students are very fortunate to have MCMC as a learning option,” said Robert Krueger, principal of MCMC. “Our presence on the MCCC campus, our students interacting regularly with college faculty and students along with the opportunity for them to focus their studies in the STEM and health science fields provide these students with a unique learning experience as compared to traditional high school.”

In a resolution recognizing MCMC, the MCCC Board of Trustees stated that the Middle College is “a model of organizational collaboration” among the Monroe County Intermediate School District, Monroe County Community College, ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital, the business community and all nine local public school districts.

MCMC has grown from 38 students and 2.5 full-time equivalent instructors in 2009-10 to a 346 students and 10 full-time equivalent instructors in 2018-19. Since 2011, when MCMC students began taking courses through dual enrollment at MCCC, through January 2019, they have earned a total of 15,786 college credits.
