MCCC To Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. With Diversity Week Events

MONROE, Mich. – Monroe County Community College will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his contributions to racial justice and equality with Diversity Week events from Jan 22-25. 

The theme for Diversity Week is “A Day Off for a Week On,” and it is sponsored by the MCCC Diversity Committee.  All events are free and open to the public and will take place at MCCC’s Main Campus on 1555 S. Raisinville Rd. in Monroe. 

The college will be closed on Monday, Jan. 21 in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

On Tuesday, Jan. 22, community member Manuel Mendez will present, “I Have a Dream, Revisited” from 2-3 p.m. in the La-Z-Boy Center, Meyer Theater.

A unity march will be held Wednesday, January 23.  Those interested in marching are invited to assemble for the march at 3:15 p.m. in the Audrey M. Warrick Student Services/Administration Building outside of the Office of Admissions before departing on the march to Welch Health Education Building lobby.  This will be followed by a diversity journey exercise from 4-5 p.m. in the Welch Health Education Building gymnasium. 

On Thursday, Jan. 24, Derek Roberts, associate professor of sociology, will present “MLK Beyond America” from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Audrey M. Warrick Student Services Administration Building, Room 173ab.

On Friday, Jan. 25, MCCC will provide international deserts and donation stations outside the Office of Admissions in Audrey M. Warrick Student Services Administration Building from noon-1 p.m.; in addition, the Grade “A” Café in the same building will offer anInternational Trio dish on its lunch menu.
