Accreditation Visit for Early Childhood Education Program Set for Oct. 1-4

MONROE, Mich. – A peer review team from the National Association for the Education of Young Children will visit Monroe County Community College from Oct. 1-4 to perform an accreditation site evaluation.

MCCC is seeking accreditation for the program from NAEYC by demonstrating evidence that the college meets the organization’s Professional Preparation Standards.  A self-study report developed by the college was accepted by NAEYC, so the ECE program is now in the candidacy phase of the accreditation process.

“NAEYC sets the standards of excellence for teacher preparation programs, and Monroe County Community College’s ECE program is committed to creating well-prepared graduates that can effectively meet the needs of diverse children and families,” said Felice Moorman, assistant professor of early childhood education.

Accreditation provides a framework for self-study, external evaluation and improvement in the quality of teacher preparation programs.  There are currently programs at 195 institutions in 39 states accredited by the commission.

After the site visit, the peer review team will make a recommendation to NAEYC regarding the ECE program’s candidacy for accreditation.  A final decision from NAEYC is expected this winter.
