MCCC to Host Lawn and Garden Seminar

MONROE, Mich. – Monroe County Community College will host a Lawn and Garden Seminar on Saturday, March 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the La-Z-Boy Center.

The keynote speaker for the seminar will be Dr. Kevin Frank, a turf grass specialist at Michigan State University who specializes in sod production, landscape turf, and the professional turf grass management of golf courses and athletic fields.

Following the keynote speaker, participants will be able to choose to attend four 45-minute breakout sessions on various lawn and gardening topics such as:

  • Planning vegetable gardens
  • Selection and care of pine, spruce and fir trees
  • Common pests and natural enemies in vegetables
  • Soil testing and analysis
  • Lawn equipment and small tractor maintenance and care
  • Mum selection and care
  • Small farm tractor safety
  • Seed selection
  • Native plants and grasses for landscaping
  • Bee keeping
  • Getting involved in the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary community garden

In addition, lawn and garden suppliers and vendors will be on hand to display their products.  Free seed samples and informational materials will be available.

The cost is $40 per person.  For Monroe County residents over age 60, the cost is only $30.  Cost includes a light breakfast and a boxed lunch.
