New ‘Practical Nurse to Registered Nurse’ Program Option Receives Full Approval From Accrediting Commission

MONROE, Mich. – Monroe County Community College’s new practical nurse to registered nurse (P.N. to R.N.) completion program option has been fully approved by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

The option – which is for students holding an unencumbered practical nursing license – had previously been approved by the college’s internal review structure and the Michigan Board of Nursing.

“The option is designed to support the academic progression of a licensed practical nurse to registered nurse by transitioning into the associate of applied science degree in nursing program offered by MCCC,” Kim Lindquist, dean of health science and director of nursing, said when the creation of new program option was announced in January.

The deadline for applying to the option for 2015-16 was March 16, and candidates are now being chosen according to previously published selection criteria.  Students accepted into the program option will begin option coursework during the Spring 2016 Semester.

“MCCC is happy to be able to offer this option to practical nurses interested in academic progression within the region and is looking forward to admitting the inaugural cohort of students,” Lindquist said.

Once admitted, the program will take a student one calendar year to complete.  Upon completion, students will be eligible to apply for a license to practice as a registered nurse and to take the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) examination.
