Mission Statement

The MCCC Library is part of the Student Success Center at MCCC. The Student Success Center provides access to services, technologies and materials to enhance a quality instructional program; stimulate the intellectual, professional, and cultural interests of students and staff; promote information literacy and research, and offer academic assistance to MCCC students.

Library Collection

The Library’s collection includes 30,000+ unique, full-text journal and magazine titles available in our online databases, and over 14,000 books. These materials support the college’s curricula and promote independent learning and research. Books and periodical articles can also be obtained through the LRC’s interlibrary loan service.

Online Databases and Full-Text Resources

Online databases are digitized collections of journals, magazines, newspapers and other reference materials that can be accessed both on and off campus.

On-campus Access

On-campus access is automatic from the labs on campus.

Off-campus access is available only to MCCC EMPLOYEES and CURRENTLY REGISTERED MCCC STUDENTS. Here’s how: From the MCCC library home page, click on the A-Z Database link. Click on the database you want to search (make sure your computer settings allow cookies and pop-ups). You will get a screen that asks for:

MCCC Students: Log in using your unique MCCC campus username and your 7-digit student ID number as password (or whatever password you use for your college email account).

MCCC Faculty/Staff: Log in using your unique MCCC network username and password.

Contact Library Staff at (734) 384-4204 during open library hours with questions or problems.

For assistance with MCCC campus username and passwords problems, call the Information Systems Help Desk (734) 384-4234 or (734) 384-4328. Once the system recognizes you, you can search other databases.

Lost or Damaged Books

Patrons are responsible for all materials that they check out of the Library. If a book is lost or damaged, the patron is responsible for the cost of replacing the item. Replacement costs vary by book and the library charges a $10 fee to process the replaced material.

Student Account Holds

A student charged for lost or damaged materials will have a hold placed on his or her account. This hold prevents the student from checking out other materials. When the item is returned and/or paid for the hold will be removed.

Check-out/Check-in/Circulation

Books and circulating serials can be checked out for two weeks, with two additional two-week renewal periods possible. Patrons can only check out five books in a subject area. Renewals can be done over the phone when books are not overdue. Books that have been placed on "hold" by other students may not be renewed. Only currently enrolled students, alumni and staff may check out Library materials. Books can be returned in the book drop when the Library is closed. The book drop is located at the northeast corner of the building.

Collaborative Study Areas

The library has several collaborative study areas available on a first come first serve basis.

Reserves

Faculty may place books, articles, audiotapes or films "on reserve" at the circulation desk. Reserve materials generally have very short circulation times, ranging anywhere from one hour to one week. Most DVDs that are placed on reserve may only be viewed in the library. Faculty with questions about Reserve materials should direct them to the Circulation Assistant.

Inter-Library Loan

When patrons locate a book title or journal article that Monroe County Community College doesn’t own, the Library is able to borrow those materials from any number of other libraries. Forms for requesting inter-library loan materials are available at the circulation desk. Inter-library loan may take some time, however, so allow at least 10 days.

Internet Access

The Library has 8 Internet stations for student use. Students are expected to comply with the College's Acceptable Use Policy. The computers in the lab are intended for research so the programs on them are limited. The following is a list of the programs available: Firefox, Edge, Google Chrome, Notepad, Adobe, MS Office, Lockdown Browser.

Reference and Research help

Faculty librarians are able to help students learn how to use the wide variety of information sources available on- and off-campus. Reference help is available on a walk-in basis, and students are welcome to make appointments for individual help by contacting one of the librarians. Librarians also offer e-mail reference service via “Ask a Librarian.”

Information Literacy

Librarians are available for classroom presentations outlining particular resources or materials. Classroom faculty are encouraged to notify the librarians about an assignment that may require extensive use of resources. We can often recommend specific materials and offer help in establishing a reserve collection, if necessary.

Book and Journal Selection

We encourage faculty to recommend materials to be included in the Library’s collection. Our mission is to support instruction, and we make every effort to supply those materials that students need for successful completion of their assignments.

DVD Titles

DVD titles can be searched using the Catalog Search. DVDs can be requested at the Circulation Desk. Select DVDs can be checked out for a two-day period, while others must be viewed in the Library. Have the DVD number identifying the title for quick service.
